ISO Noise Explained

General / 17 November 2018

ISO NOISE

ISO noise is also referred to as image noise and is a very common problem in today’s digital cameras, it is random and it refers to variations of color and brightness in the picture.

The ISO noise somewhat resembles electronic noise and it can be triggered by the sensor of the camera. At the same time, ISO noise can also appear under the form of film grain: either way, this is an undesirable effect that can ruin a picture. On the other hand, noise can also appear as speckled pixels of color that give the picture that unpleasant grainy effect.

Here you will find out more about the ISO noise, its underlying causes and the measures you can take in order to avoid it.

HOW TO AVOID ISO NOISE

As mentioned above, the digital camera sensor is directly connected to the amount and intensity of color noise. Digital cameras (as opposed to traditional analog cameras) rely on a sensor rather than on a film, and this sensor receives light that will be processed into electric charges that are reflected as pixels in the final image.

Every fluctuation in the signal or in the electron flow around the camera sensor can result in electronic noise. At the same time, sensor imperfections or overheating can also trigger noise.

In order to lower the risk for image noise, professional photographers are advised to purchase high-end equipment, as using state-of-the-art equipment is the easiest way to combat noise (not to mention that they are also linked to increased performance).

The age of the camera also plays a pivotal role, as older cameras collect less light as opposed to newer ones, and this can result in a greater amount of noise. Otherwise stated, if you use outdated gear you are more likely to experience image noise.

On the other hand, the camera’s manual mode can also add to the noise. If you set the camera’s exposure mode to automatic/manual, the images will look grainy.

This is why it is highly recommended to become familiar with the exposure settings and to use them in your best interest in order to lower the amount of digital noise in the photos. All the information you need will be found in your camera’s users manual.

Another tip to reduce photo noise is to make the images brighter. The brighter the image, the less visible the noise will be. It often happens that noise appears in the darker parts of your photos, this is why adding an extra light source of any kind will not only reduce the amount of shadow, but it will also reduce the mount of noise in the picture.

DOES UNDEREXPOSURE TRIGGER ISO NOISE ?

There are several factors that influence the onset of ISO noise: the light sensitivity of your camera, the aperture and the shutter speed are three of the factors. Low ISO means less sensitivity to light, and high ISO means higher sensitivity.

Low ISO will result in darker pictures given the fact that it allows very little light (and, as mentioned above, darker pictures are more prone to ISO noise than brighter ones), and underexposure can cause noise as well.

On the other hand, overexposure can cause the bothersome “burned” appearance of the photos, this is why the photographer needs to find the best exposure time based on several factors.

DOES SPOT METERING HELP TO REDUCE ISO NOISE ?

The notion of metering refers to the way in which your camera determines the aperture and the shutter speed, by taking into account both the ISO speed and the available lighting conditions. There are various types of metering: partial, center-weighted, spot metering and so on.

Spot metering will give you more control over the exposure time, as opposed to all the other metering options available. However, this is what makes spot metering very difficult to use, especially by beginners.

Spot metering is particularly useful for reducing the ISO noise when shooting the portrait of somebody when the light source is located in the back of the subject. At the same time, metering is widely used for creating very unique exposures in conditions of unusual ambient lighting.

CAN SENSOR DUST CAUSE ISO NOISE ?

Dust and debris on the sensor is one of the most common causes of ISO noise, this is why professional photographers must clean the camera sensor on a constant basis. At the same time, dust is known to appear at narrow apertures, and it is almost never visible in the picture when the aperture is widely open.

Dust appears as very small black dots, similar to pictures. Sensor noise and sensor dust are very similar, therefore if you experience noise in the pictures it is recommended to clean the sensor.

Long Exposure Photography – What You Should Know

Photography enthusiasts know the beauty and benefits of long exposure photography, however it can be quite frustrating for amateur photographers. It takes some time and effort for anybody to learn the do’s and don’ts of as well as the essential tips in long exposure photography.

Just keep in mind that the moment you already know everything what you need to learn, it will surely payoff.

This article is intended to provide you basic and important information you should know about this type of photography.

What is Long Exposure Photography?

Also known as Time exposure Photography, Long Exposure Photography includes the use of long duration shutter speed in order to capture still photos with sharpness while obscuring, smearing, or blurring the unstationary elements.

Long exposure is a great technique which can be used in night photography because it is the easiest one to accomplish specifically in low light conditions. Its effects are breathtaking with an ethereal quality.

In order to produce the desired outcome, the camera’s shutter is left open for a lengthy period of time to allow more light to be absorbed. With this, you will surely need a sturdy tripod because the camera needs to be stationary during the whole period when the shutter is open.

Another important fact about this type of photography is, it can be used in getting rid of unwanted detail from a particular image and soothing the details which might be of distraction to everyone who views it.

Moreover, a lot of long exposure effects can be done which include light trails, star trails, and landscapes.

Long Exposure Photography – 3 Useful Tips.

TIP 1

  • The Importance Of Stabilization

One of the vital things you should always remember when taking long exposure shots is the use of a very sturdy tripod in order to avoid any movement, as much as possible.

Stabilization is very important since you will need to raise the duration of your camera’s shutter speed. Basically, this is not just about 10 seconds or so. For instance, if you want to take photos of star trails in the night, 5 minutes of exposure time is needed. During this particular period of time, any movement or anything will be recorded by the camera.

TIP 2

  • It Is Time To Be More Technical

Another thing you need to know is to become knowledgeable about the technical features of your camera and learn to use them the proper way.

In taking long exposure shots, produce the clearest images by shooting at the lowest ISO. The use of high aperture is recommended in order to focus the maximum area and compliment the precedent point.

TIP 3

  • Practice Is The Key

If you really want to become a skilled photographer in long exposure shots, learn the importance of trial and error. In other words, practice and practice whenever you can.

Do not be afraid to do experiment and play around with your camera. As you shot images, it is never a crime to delete them if they are not yet the kind of results you’ve been longing to achieve. And then, practice again until you get the perfect shot.

Steel Wool Photography

Having Fun With Steel  Wool Photography

Steel Wool Photography also referred to as steel wool spinning photography proves that creativity has no limit. With a few household items, you can create a photograph that comes alive, with flaming sparks almost jumping out of the picture.

There is no expensive equipment needed, and the results are exceptional photographs.

What You Need To Do  Steel Wool Photography.

Camera.

  • Your camera should have an adjustable shutter speed, and should be loaded with 100 to 200 ISO film for long exposure to minimize any grainy background appearance. The shutter speed used should be between 15-30 seconds, and an f-stop of 5-6 should be set.

Steel Wool.

  • Using Grades 0-0000 will produce greater sparks. Anything above Grade 1 steel wool, will not produce sparks, because it is too thick. Guitar Rocks.

Whisk.

  • This handy kitchen aid, will be filled with steel wool, and become the spinning object on fire.

Steel Cable.

  • A steel chain will also suffice, and should measure approximately 2 feet in length.

Tripod.

  • For long exposure shots, tripods are necessary in order to keep the camera from moving.

Lighter/Matches.

  • You will need a source to light the steel wool for your picture.

A Safe Area.

  • Steel wool shots should only be taken where there is no risk of catching anything near on fire. Shots on the snow, sand, or cement, and in wide-open areas are recommended for your safety, and the safety of others.

  • Make sure that there are no objects within reach of your photo-shoot area, so that the flying sparks will not ignite nearby areas.

The Process For Steel Wool Photography.

Build  The  Steel Wool Cage.

  • Tear the steel wool, so that you can fit it into the inside of the whisk.

  • Attach the whisk with the steel wool inside, to the steel chain or cable.

  • Set up your camera on a tripod, pointing to the location you will be standing. A flashlight standing up from the spot can be used as a locator, for the focus of your camera.

  • Set your camera on a 10-second timer.

  • Light the steel wool from your designated position (flashlight), and start spinning the flaming whisk! When you spin, the sparks will be flying from within the whisk, and the photograph will look amazing.

Best Time To Shoot.

  • The best time to shoot is within 30-45 minutes after sunset. The sky will still have enough color, to create a beautiful blue background for your photographs.

Safety Precautions.

  • Have a fire extinguisher available and ready, just in case you happen to ignite a surrounding object. Protect your eyes with safety goggles, and protect your skin by wearing long pants and long sleeves to cover your legs and arms.

Experiment.

  • Try different exposure settings on your camera, in order to get different exposure times. By doing this you can see more, or less of the background as a contrast.

Steel wool photography is fun to do, but it is extremely important to do it safely. You can really get some interesting and creative photos.

The photographic effects resemble sparks dancing, and shooting out of the photograph! Steel wool photography can be such fun to experiment with, and can also help you to understand long exposure, if the techniques are done in a safe manner. Other areas that utilize long exposure are light painting photography, night photography.

Infrared Photography

General / 17 November 2018

If you are interested in Infrared Photography please read the entire article and discover

what is possible with infrared photography, its ability to create spectacular looking photographic images.

This type of unique photography is made possible by image sensing equipment or standard film that is particularly sensitive to light in the infrared band. Typically a filter is used to limit visible light from striking film and only allowing infrared signals to come through.

Images Are Artistically Unique With Infrared.

What is truly special about infrared type photographic images is that they are artistically unique because they work with light that is not visible to the human eye.

Landscapes, portraits and other types of photography look uniquely different when filmed in infrared. For example, where the sky would normally be deep blue in appearance it suddenly becomes a darker black in color.

Give Your Images A Dramatic Appearance.

In addition, natural settings such as plant and tree foliage will develop a unique white color. This in effect creates a stunning contrast in infrared photographs that gives these images a dramatic and pronounced appearance.

While images are very unique and custom looking, IR photographic imaging can be difficult to master. The process of mastering this type of photography skill can be time-consuming with a steep learning curve.

Capture Invisible Light.

With today’s modern digital cameras the most convenient way to capture invisible light and create stunning infrared images is to use a standard D-SLR type camera. One important note is that this type of camera should be configured to use filters designed specifically for infrared photography. The filter is known as an IR-Filter.

Stabilization Of The Camera.

It is also important to note that to properly capture invisible light or infrared photography that you must incorporate a tripod into your invisible light related photographic pursuits.

This is critical to ensuring that you get the best infrared photographs possible. Stabilization of the camera is the key to good infrared photography because of longer exposures and slower shutter speeds.

Portraits Of People of Landscapes That Look Surreal.

Infrared photography creates exotic looking camera-effects that is indicative of infrared filters combined with the appropriate infrared film or image sensing equipment. Effects range from fantasy-like black and white photographs to portraits of people that look surreal. Capturing infrared or invisible light is indeed an art that can result in dramatic photographic art being produced.

Touch-up Of False Colors.

Infrared photography also requires having a good working knowledge of software applications such as Photoshop, though one can learn these applications.

This is often necessary due to the fact that infrared images many times will require the touch-up of false colors and other infrared attributes.

Searching a wide variety of infrared photography galleries online can help one to get a feel for what is possible with this amazing type of photography.

Are All Camera’s Capable Of Infrared Photo’s?

In essence virtually all cameras are capable of producing IR photographs. However, the conversion for certain cameras can be costly and complex.

For example, installing a light-blocking filter in front of a camera’s sensor can require extensive retrofitting. For many the benefit of stunning images is well worth the cost and effort.

Whether you use a temporary IR filter or permanently convert your camera for taking infrared photography, one thing is certain and that is that the images you produce will be awe inspiring.

High Speed Photography

General / 17 November 2018

High Speed Photography Capturing The Moment

High speed photography is taking images, using incredibly quick shutter speeds. These pictures can capture movement which is too quick for the eye to see. High-speed photography is used for many sports events, and can capture a hummingbird’s wings, or even a water droplet.

Set up, and synchronization are very important elements for successful high-speed pictures. Shutter speed, flash, and film speed are the variables used. There are expensive cameras made specifically for high speed photography, but you can also use a DSLR camera as well.

The Materials Needed For High Speed Photography Are:

  • Camera – A basic SLR camera can be used to create high speed photographs. The more manual settings the camera has, the more you can manipulate shutter speed for the success of your photos. You must be able to synchronize shutter speed and flash, for successful exposure of the film. Camera tripods are also helpful in high-speed photography shoots.
  • External Flash – The flash illuminates the object to be captured. The shorter the burst of light flash is, the better the exposure will look. The goal is for the flash to go off exactly when the event to be captured is happening. This is such a short amount of time, that the quicker flash is better, to keep pace with the shutter speed.
  • Controller with a Sensor OR Time Machine – A controller is necessary to indicate when the flash should go off. You can make your own to set off an electronic flash, with certain triggers such as a clap, light, motion, or electrical signals

Capturing A Moment That Our Eyes Do Not See.

Is quite an amazing thing.

  • Scientists use high speed photography and time-lapse photography in their studies, to show exactly how things that we cannot see, really work. Some cameras are set up with motion sensors to track wildlife, or migration patterns.

The Reason Why High Speed Photographs Are Interesting:

  • Very detailed in time and process, and may explain why we see what we see.
  • In sports, high-speed photos are nice, because they may capture the winning kick, or show the highest jump. Imagine being able to do this yourself.

Capturing A Millisecond Can Be Accomplished

Without a lot of expensive extras.

  • With a subject, a place to work, a camera and flash,
  • You can create your own studio.
  • High speed photographs are definitely conversation pieces, and among the most interesting to view.

Why Consider High Speed Photography?

  • It is very rewarding
  • Take the same photographs like a pro.
  • You may need to take many shots.
  • If you have the basic materials, precision and patience, you have what it takes to succeed in taking high speed photographs.

Levitation Photography

Defying  Gravity With Levitation Photography

Can you really take photographs that have objects floating around weightlessly in the air?

Levitation photography is a special effect, showing people or objects which seem to be defying gravity. You can make people look as though they are floating in air, climbing walls, or even standing on a ceiling.

Creative Idea

  1. Decide what type of levitation photo you would like to create
  2. Choose the subject and setting.
  3. Some settings or subject poses work better than others, so experimenting with a few is a good idea, if you are just learning to work with this process.

Camera and Manual Settings

  1. Use a camera with manual setting to take pictures of the background that you would like to use.
  2. Manual settings assure that the film exposure and focus remain constant in each picture, which is important when using the editing process.

The Benefits Of using A Tripod With Levitation Photography

  1. Using a camera tripod keeps the camera steady and pointed in exact same position so that multiple pictures of the same scene can be taken with, and without the levitating subject.
  2. Tripods save time, and create much more realistic photos after the editing process.

Consistent Lighting

  1. Try not to alter the light used for each picture, as it will become noticeable in the final photograph after editing.
  2. The goal is to keep the background in both pictures (background only, and background with the subject) the same, so that the final picture looks realistic.

Take The Pictures

  1. Shoot pictures of your subject in the scene that you have chosen.
  2. For instance, if you want a person levitating off of the floor, the subject would stand on a box or stool in the scene chosen, and a picture is taken.
  3. Then the picture of the exact same scene by itself is taken without the subject, using the same manual settings for each.
  4. Never alter the focus or zoom it needs to be the same for the photos when it comes to post editing.

Edit The Pictures Taken

  1. The image of the setting by itself, and the setting with the subject standing on the stool will be combined using Photoshop digital darkroom Layer Mask.
  2. This editing process will eliminate the stool from the final picture, and your subject will appear to be levitating from the floor.

Levitation Photography Is!

  • Achieved with post editing
  • You need 2 photo’s.  IMPORTANT
  • One with the subject in it on something like a ladder which is removed in post editing
  • The second photo required is the background minus the subject or props.
  • Levitation photography is included in trick photography and special effects 2nd edition.

The key To Successful Levitation Photography.

  • Is to shoot the photographs in the same exact location
  • With and without the subject (I am repeating myself I know because this is IMPORTANT).
  • With the help of the Photoshop editing process, your results will look much more true-to-life than if you simply cut and paste parts of each photo.
  • When the Photoshop editing process is completed, you will have an unbelievably realistic-looking levitation photo to admire and to have some fun with.

HDR Photography

HDR Photography What You Need to Know

Sometimes when you take a picture, you may get a wonderful shot of a sunset, but the beach may be too dark to see. Other times, you may see a beautiful flower on the landscape, but the background of the picture is too bright.  Balancing the brightest and darkest parts of your picture, is done by manipulating the dynamics of the photo.

HDR photography, allows you to see a wider range of detail, by adjusting the brightest and darkest parts of the photograph. A picture’s dynamics can affect how much detail is revealed. Our eyes are able to see colors and perceive tones of light, that a camera cannot. This range of color and tone is the dynamic range in photography. If you have too much dark or light, details in the picture are lost.

The Benefits Of HDR Photography Tips

HDR Photography (High Dynamic Range),

  • Any camera that allows manual exposure control can create multiple images for HDR processing. Taking several pictures to enhance with HDR processing is done by adjusting the shutter speed, or aperture on the camera while taking several pictures of the exact same scene. On digital cameras, this would mean altering the ISO speed for each shot.
  • After taking multiple pictures of the same shot, but varying contrast in each one, these HDR software programs can then merge your photos into one very detailed picture.
  • The programs take best in details from all of the photos, and blend them together into the very crisp and brilliantly colored picture. These programs vary in price, results achieved, and level of difficulty. They also vary on the type of computer you have, so it is wise to review each, before purchasing.
  • High Dynamic Range Photography can achieve such detail, that the picture may almost look unreal, or like a painting. Some people prefer to work only with a limited dynamic range, by adjusting the contrast minimally. By doing this you enjoy seeing the richness of all tones and colors, with brilliant details, then HDR is worth your efforts in preserving the most life-like photographs.
  • HDR allows you to see a wider range of detail, by adjusting the brightest and darkest parts of the photograph.
  • The camera just does not have enough settings to capture the range of detail that our eyes can detect.
  • HDR photography is a technique which is used to make these ranges visible in a photograph.

The Process Of HDR Photography

  • HDR is a process used after several pictures are taken of the same scene, using varying exposure levels.
  • The process combines the best of all exposure levels in these identical images to enhance details. This process allows you to capture the smallest detail from within the brightest to the darkest part of the shot. This blending process balances the light and dark ranges, providing a picture which is more true to what the eye sees.

HDR Photography Software Programs.

There are several HDR software programs that are offered on the internet, which can be used to enhance your photographs. Some of these, in no particular order are:

  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Photomatix Pro
  • Corel Paintshop
  • Luminance HDR
  • Fusion
  • Nik HDR Efex Pro
  • Enfuse

Light Painting Photography is fun

General / 17 November 2018

Fun To Do And Fun To View

When you use light painting photography techniques you are the artist, and the light source is your paintbrush. Light painting photography for beginners is a fun technique to use, because you are involved with the creative aspect of the photograph making your photo’s stand out with brilliant light patterns and color.

You are not just taking a picture of what is there, you are creating something to be seen, with a light source of your source. Light painting photography definitely catches the eye, and is used in many commercial advertisements. It is also just fun to experiment with various light sources, using your inner creativity to create something unique.

Light painting photography for beginners

Light painting photography for beginners is a great experience for beginners learning about long exposure photos, and manual camera settings. Creating a photograph with brilliant light effects is a simple technique, and does not require buying expensive camera equipment. You are using techniques to produce photography tricks.

Key Requirement For Light Painting Photography For Beginners

For creating amazing light paint photography art you require a camera that is capable of a slower shutter speed that is in the range of one second or greater.

The Light Painting Photography For Beginners Technique

Equipment Used

  • You only require a DSLR camera, a tripod, a shutter release cable (optional), and light sources for experimentation.

Setting Up Light Painting Photography For Beginners Tips

  • With the camera securely on the tripod, mark the spot where you will be using the light source, so that it is framed in the camera. Manually set the camera in this manner
  • Use the lowest ISO value that your camera offers. This will provide a photograph with the least amount of noise, or grainy feature.
  • Aperture should be set to encompass a wider depth of field (DOF), so the smaller, the better.
  • Exposure time will depend on the ISO and aperture setting, but starting within an exposure range of 30 seconds usually works best.
  • Shoot light painting pictures in a darkroom, or outside after dark. Some ambient moonlight or surrounding lights can add to the background photo, if you would like to incorporate the background into the composition.
  • Standing on your previously marked spot (within the camera frame), get creative and move the light source to be captured on the exposure. Wearing dark-colored clothing prevents you from being seen in the photograph.

One thing to note about light sources is that the wider the light diameter, the thicker the line of light or paint stroke will be in your photograph. You can experiment to use sources of light that will capture the effect that you want to see in the picture. The type of motion that you use with the light source will determine the shape or pattern in the photograph.

Commonly Used Light Sources

  • LED or fiber optic pens or wands
  • Flashlights
  • Laser lights
  • Cell phone light
  • Lighter flints
  • Matches
  • Candles
  • Fireworks or sparklers
  • Burning steel wool

photographic canvas

The light is the paint on your photographic canvas, and your movement of the light source is the stroke of the paint brush.

You can make many unique patterns, using multiple light sources. Beginning with one light source and viewing the effects made, may help you to choose which you like best for further creations.

Light painting photography for beginners is a fun way to experiment with camera settings, practice using these settings and adjustments, and creating your own works of photographic art.

Light paintings do not have to be carefully planned to be successful, just experiment, learn, and have fun.

  • Light paintings can resemble quick strokes or pencil sketches. Perhaps one of the best ways to create a true light painting image is to move the camera in a darkened room or at night while outdoors. In effect, a camera can be removed from its tripod and manipulated in the way that one would use a standard paintbrush.

  • A perfect example of light painting photography would be using a star filled night sky as the artist’s primary canvas. Following this simple idea the camera then becomes in effect the artists brush. As the camera is manipulated and moved with its very slow shutter speed it creates the effect of light strokes that develop into artistic patterns and then become aesthetically pleasing images.

  • The art of light painting photography can be combined with modern technology through the use of a web cam. The creation of incredibly beautiful abstract photographic art is possible when images are displayed in real time on a computer monitor. The art created is fun, unique and interesting.
